Unschooling is the radical idea that living life is the only preparation children need for living life. We believe that children are learning all the time, wherever they are. And it is our opinion that children weren't made to sit at a desk all day reciting facts. At least not our free-thinking, question-asking, tree-climbing imaginative wild children.
As unschoolers, learning looks different daily. Sometimes we are cuddled on the couch reading a classic book together, sometimes the kids are sitting at the table working on their writing, sometimes we are learning fractions from baking brownies, and sometimes we are learning about American history by traveling to that part of the country.
As wildschoolers, we spend a lot of time outside learning about the natural world from exploring it. Our "classroom" most days are the woods we are exploring, the rivers we are playing in, the mountains we are climbing and the oceans we are swimming in.
And the fun thing is, when the world is your classroom, your backpack is not filled with textbooks, homework, rulers or erasers. Instead, it is filled with library books, journals, rocks, sticks, and leaves.
As a child-led learning family, we love watching our children explore their interests and follow their passions. This has led to them teaching themselves how to draw, learn new songs on the piano, play new sports, get acting parts in movies, and even get one of their books published already. It is truly amazing what children can accomplish when they are given the time and space to follow their dreams.
